DETOUR TO THE UNKNOWN

Hello friends, family and fellow travelers on the road called life. All of us like to map out and plan the direction our life is heading. We all know that we're not in control, but live like we are. This is the story of my rude awakening that I was not in fact in control of my life.

Hospital Time!

Hello!

Lianne has had a very busy last few days. After a week of increasing pain, nausea, and vomiting, she was taken by friends to the emergency room for rehydration and assessment. After being seen quickly by doctors, Lianne was admitted to hospital and transferred to a larger city centre for care.

She appreciates all the messages/notes ya’ll have been sending her way, and although she is tired and doesn’t have the energy to reply, she wants you all to know how grateful she is to receive them!

First and foremost - HER FAMILY IS COMING! Her mom, sister, brother and his family are all arriving from Holland on Tuesday.

I’ll give a quick summary of what all has taken place.

She arrived at the Foothills hospital because the physicians in Emergency in Red Deer saw there had been changes in the tumour we knew about in the lung, and were worried about a possible infection. Since this cancer is very aggressive, the doctor got her to Calgary so that she could be in the place where all the specialists are as an inpatient to get things happening quickly.

She went for more CT scans and X-rays to recheck things and get some more information. Thankfully her dad was with her and spent the night by her side!

The results of these tests showed that the tumour in her lungs has grown significantly. They also reviewed the scans she had on Thursday in Edmonton which showed a large tumour in her abdomen/pelvis.

Many doctors came in and out today to assess and gather information. Surgical, medical (chemotherapy), and radiation oncologists - Cancer Doctors - are all reviewing the case and working together on this. While at this moment there is no indication for surgery, things such as radiation and chemotherapy will most likely start in the next few days for symptom control and to provide relief from the pain she is suffering

Lianne is very tired. The tumour burden on her body is increasing, as well as the pain and other symptoms that come with that. Though her spirit is strong, her body is weakening.

As some of the people who love her, it is so hard to know what to do in times such as these. But one thing we can do is pray! Knowing that we are walking together with her right now in equal parts pain and hope, grief and joy.

This afternoon we were reading a passage from Max Lucado’s book Travelling Light, which spoke to the importance of remembering the words of Psalm 23.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in wanting. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil - for You are with me… Surely Your goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Lianne has a wonderful medical team around her - but more importantly - she is in the hands of her Creator, who knew that this day would come while she was growing in the womb.

What has come as a devastating shock to us was known to the Lord from the beginning.

We don’t have any words to soothe the pain that I am sure we are all experiencing, but I know that as we honestly wrestle with not understanding why, we can embrace what we know to be the goodness of the God, and come together to love our friend through the days to come.

As more information comes through, we will let you know! Thank you all for who you are to Lianne! She loves each of you so greatly!
